Designating the Hunterian Art Gallery and Mackintosh House, Glasgow
Overview
We propose to designate the Hunterian Art Gallery and Mackintosh House in Hillhead, Glasgow as a listed building.
Built in 1973–78 and opened in 1980 and 1981, it was designed by the architect, William Whitfield to house the University of Glasgow’s art collection and an internal re-assemblage of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s and Margaret Macdonald’s former home at 78 Southpark Avenue (demolished 1963).
Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) is regarded as one of the leading architects and designers of the 20th century. The artist, Margaret MacDonald (1864–1933), is acknowledged as a principal creative force behind the development of the Art Nouveau Glasgow Style.
We think the building is important for its high quality, innovative and monumental design that reflects Brutalist trends of the 1970s in its use of textured concrete and geometric forms to create a sculptural effect. It has special interest for the association with Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret MacDonald and the inherent rarity of the surviving and reassembled early 20th century interior scheme. The Hunterian Art Gallery and Mackintosh House is prominent in its campus setting and is a rare example of a purpose-built gallery of the 1970s.
