Designating Beauly Primary School and Schoolhouse

Overview

We propose to designate the earliest parts of Beauly Primary School and its adjacent schoolhouse as a listed building.

The school and former schoolhouse were designed by Matthews and Lawrie in the ‘school board gothic’ style and built in 1875-6. Constructed in coursed and snecked local red sandstone, the buildings are located at the northwestern edge of the village of Beauly and set back from the road within a larger school site.

This primary school was built as part of the first phase of board schools built in the Highlands following the 1872 Education (Scotland) Act. It is an early and architecturally well-detailed example of a rural board school with a detached contemporary schoolhouse. Both buildings feature high quality stonework and gothic-style detailing to their exterior elevations; as such, they are a good surviving and distinctive example of their ‘board school’ building type.

We are now gathering views on our proposal to list the school (the 1875 building and the former schoolhouse only) at category C.
